Key Points
- Wind, rain and other elements are constantly shaping and changing earths landforms - However a lot of the world has also been shaped by people -The geosphere is always changing, even though it might not be that noticeable itshappening Cool fact - Although you typically think of deserts as hot dry places, antarctica is also considered a desert |
Types of Landforms
Landform |
What is it? |
Formatation |
Volcano |
Volcanoes are basically magma filled mountains |
Magma from below the surface push earth up and eventually erupt, layers of lava collect over the years giving them a mountain shape. |
Mountain |
A large peaked chunk of earth with steep cliff-like sides. |
The collision of tectonic plates thrusting the terrain upwards. |
Island |
A piece of land completely surrounded by water |
Many things can form an island, the build up of dirt sand and coral, cooled lava from a underwater volcano, or even a break off of a country. |
Desert |
An area of land where water is lost mainly to air opposed to precipitation, although we mainly think of deserts as hot and dry, Antarctica is also considered a dessert |
The video didn't show much fro the cause of deserts but they are ``` |
Plateau |
A plateau is an elevated piece of land |
Sometimes from the erosion of mountains or much like a volcano but the magma doesn't quite break the surface, leaving the top flat. |
Valley |
Valleys are lower lands found between mountains and hills. |
Valleys appear when there are two mountains side by side |
Delta |
Deltas are located at the mouths of rivers and typically have a triangle shape |
Accumulation of dirt and debris washed together to form a piece of land |
GeosphereThe geosphere( also known as the lithosphere) is the base of the 3 other spheres, earth's crust. All the rock landforms and minerals inside them are part of the geosphere.
|
BiosphereEvery living thing from plants to us humans are part of the biosphere. The biosphere grows on the geosphere and holds most of the hydrosphere.
|
|
HydrosphereAll the water on earth is from the hydrosphere, including ocean, all the way up to rain stored in the clouds.
|
AtmosphereThe final sphere is the atmosphere, atmo comes from the greek word for air. That's just what the atmosphere is! All the gases on earth belong to the atmosphere.
